The county clerk and recorder can provide locally recorded documents related to a mining claim and the land surrounding it. Depending on the county, you may be able to obtain:

The original location certificate or location notice.
Amendments correcting or changing the claim description.
Transfers, assignments, deeds, and other conveyances.
Affidavits of annual labor or assessment work.
Notices of intent, affidavits of performance, and abandonment documents.
Claim maps, surveys, plats, and legal descriptions.
Easements, rights-of-way, liens, and other encumbrances.
Deeds showing whether the land is privately owned or associated with a patented mining claim.
Document numbers, recording dates, grantors, grantees, and sometimes scanned copies.

Ask the office to search by:

Claim name.
Claimant or owner name.
Township, range, and section.
Parcel number.
Recording book and page.
Document or reception number.

The clerk and recorder generally cannot tell you whether an unpatented federal claim is currently valid, whether a mineral discovery is legally sufficient, or whether the land is open to mineral entry. For those questions, use the BLM’s Mineral & Land Records System and contact the relevant BLM office.

Also, county records may be incomplete or out of date for federal purposes. Compare the recording history with BLM records, because a document recorded with the county does not necessarily establish that the claim was timely filed with the BLM or properly maintained.
